Hello again!
This weeks blog is going to be based around the area of project management and why companies often struggle with implementing Information Systems.
According to Project Management Institute (2023), project management is using knowledge, tools, techniques and skills to provide others with something of value and information systems can be defined as a compilation of numerous data sets that guarantees the accomplishment of organisations objectives (Indeed, 2023).
There are many types of information systems that companies can use for example management information systems or decision supports systems, however many organisations struggle with implementing these systems for many reasons.
One reasons that I believe causes organisations to struggle with information system implementation is unrealistic expectations. If organisations are overly optimistic with their expectations but are not equipped to deal with problems and adapt to them, it often leads to struggles as the capital may not be available to solve those problems or the expertise is missing.
Another reason that organisations may struggle is technical challenges. Organisations must think about the hardware and software aspect of information technologies along with the difficulty of upgrading old systems to new versions frequently.
Furthermore, I also think that organisations who do not employ suitable staff also risk information implementation struggles as there is not the correct level of expertise available to complete the information technology tasks. Employees who may lack computer skills can also cause problems as it effects the efficiency of an organisations operations.
My final reason as to why organisations may struggle with implementing information systems is a lack of management. If the top manager is not prepared or does not have an understanding of what the project entails it can lead to issues during the implementation stage and a new approach will be needed.
An example of information system implementation struggles in the NHS as they try to go completely paperless, however have been met with many challenges, like not having unrealistic expectations regarding how quick they can achieve the paperless NHS.
